Lost worlds and ports of call

FileMaker development standards

As a FileMaker developer and trainer, I believe standard exist to leave well-defined breadcrumbs when I or anyone else has to re-trace steps to understand how solutions were developed. This goes for layouts, naming conventions and structure in the relationships graph, scripting, and calculations. Kirk Bowman of MightyData has some great links to articles on standards that are well worth reading and re-reading.

Lazy comment spam attitude

I get occasional comment spam. Not too much, but then I hardly write anything here to warrant spammer attention. However, I am trying out a pair of new plug-ins to see if they have any effect on the few spammer who notice this blog. Let’s see what happens.

Trust us with your data

One more reason I avoid sites like facebook and myspace. In the first place I would not like to be peppered with advertising at my “own” page. There’s the lack of time issue. And then, there’s the fact that your access can be revoked at any time, for unstated reasons. It’s almost like they’re the government, citing “security reasons,” so that users have no idea why they are banned, and can never discover the reason.

Mucking about in Drupal Again

I’m exciting about new potential project dealing with sf reviews online. The structure will be based on Drupal, an open source CMS driven site that uses PHP and MySQL. I looked into Drupal a little over a year ago, built a small site and test-drove the application. Nothing came out of that effort, but now I have some incentive to take another look. I download version 6.3 (it was 5.x when I last tried), installed it and now I need to a refresher on all the aspects of Drupal. Time to stretch the brain.
