Lost worlds and ports of call

Moving to Firefox?

As a Mac user I know what it’s like to be kicked around and forced to eat the table scraps in the internet wars. I have tried virtually every browser that runs on the Mac, but always fall back on Safari because a) it has all my bookmarks and b) it’s the most elegant and visually pleasing browser to my eye. But Blogger no longer lets me spell-check on Safari, and now Preview stopped working. At the bottom of each posting window I see the shortcuts taunting me, as none of them work in Safari. I open the same Blogger posting page in Firefox, and everything works. I guess I should switch everything over to Firefox, though my new LiveJournal page works fine in Safari, and Firefox has just such a hideous interface. Ideally I should dump blogger altogether and figure out how to move the localhost version of my blog on Movable Type that I created as a lark in October 2005. It still works fine, and is loaded with far more features I like than either LJ or Blogger.

WordPress had a nifty little import function that moved all my old blogger posts over in about 3 minutes. FWIW. I also know what you mean about the lack of a decent browser for the Mac – most of them work better on Windoze, especially Opera, and Safari has…. “performance issues.” I’ve been alternating between Flock and Firefox; a friend swears by Camino.

That’s definitely something to consider. I have been thinking about getting my own domain for a while, something that will let me do stuff with PHP and mysql. What’s the core behind WordPress? I have never heard of this software, though I have ben reading about Victor Milan’s efforts with that environment. Opera is fast, but has a few quirks. I used to like Camino, though I haven’t tried it since it went to version 1. I’ll download a new version and give this another shot.

I must remark that if you were to move over to livejournal, which does work with your browser, that would constitute a small measure of market feedback to both organizations that carry blogs. It would be even better if there were a way to send a message saying “I’ve moved to livejournal because they support Safari and you don’t,” of course.

I don’t propose this as a conclusive argument, as other variables may be more important to you.

My blog is hosted on the WordPress server, so I don’t have to worry about the underlying core. I did a survey of law school bloggers (I also maintain my school’s blog) and the two most recommended package were Moveable Type and WordPress.

You’re right about Opera – it has a lot of quirks working with a Mac. Bill is right about Livejournal – it does work with a Mac and Firefox (I use Deepest Sender in Firefox to post stuff to my livejournal page), but Livejournal isn’t as customizable or feature-rich as WordPress or Moveable Type.

I am not yet comfortable with livejournal; to me this seems very much like a community type blog, an AOL for the Web 2.0 age (and I was an early AOL user so this is not an insult). LJ to me also seems like a more personal type blog, and my Blogger site was set up mainly as a way to post news items, with occasional commentary and some few instances of personal type entries. The key is to find a comfort zone somewhere, and that will take time.

I did stumble across the same tag unfriendliness towards Safari in LJ as in blogger.
